Women’s Care Unit

Lismore Base Hospital’s Women’s Care Unit features five state-of-the-art modern birthing suites, 18 antenatal/postnatal beds, and a Level 4 Neonatal Special Care Nursery (SCN) staffed by highly experienced neonatal nurses and midwives. The SCN provides specialist care to sick term and preterm neonates born after 32 weeks’ gestation.

Specialist midwives, nurses, staff specialists, paediatricians and paediatric registrars work in collaboration with local GP’s, Home Birth Midwives, Allied Health, Aboriginal Maternal Infant Health Service Midwives and Aboriginal Health Workers to provide care to women and their families in the Lismore and surrounding areas. The unit also cares for women undergoing gynaecology surgeries.

The Level 5 maternity service cares for women in a variety of women-centred models of care including: midwives’ clinic, a team midwifery model (Lismore Community Midwifery Service LCMS), a midwife/General Practitioner shared pregnancy care program, and a doctors’ clinic for women requiring complex care. Women may also choose care with a private obstetrician or private midwife. There is also a midwifery in the home (MITH) service, an early pregnancy assessment service, and a pregnancy day stay unit for pregnant women.

Antenatal Assessment Unit / Pregnancy Day Stay

If you have any concerns about yourself or your baby or you need a check-up outside of your regular antenatal appointments we can see you in our antenatal assessment/day stay unit. Please don’t hesitate to call us any time that you have concerns. Our unit has two recliner chairs and two beds for comfort during your short stay care.

Gynaecology Women’s Care

Our unit also cares for women having gynaecology surgery and early pregnancy care.

Special Care Nursery

Our Special Care Nursery provides specialist care for sick and premature babies. The nursery is supported by highly experienced neonatal nurses and midwives, staff specialists, paediatricians and paediatric registrars. You will also have access to additional care and support from our extended team of social workers, speech therapists and physiotherapists.

A small number of babies may need extra care that we cannot provide in Lismore. If this happens, we may move your baby (and you) to another hospital with intensive care specialists. Before moving your baby we will always talk with you and give you as much time and information as possible.

Our closest hospitals with specialist services are in the Gold Coast and Brisbane. When your baby is well enough we will plan to bring them back to Lismore to be close to home.
