After birth

After your baby’s birth a midwife will talk with you about postnatal support for when you are at home. We offer care for you and your baby for up to two weeks (14 days) after birth.

When to call the midwife

If you notice any of these things listed below you should contact birth suite at the Hospital where your baby was born, or your MGP midwife, immediately to ask for advice. Call us any time of the day or night, we are here 24 hours a day.

 

In an emergency call 000

Call us immediately if you have:

  • headaches that are severe or are happening at the same time as:
  • blurred vision, seeing flashing lights, nausea or vomiting
  • shortness of breath
  • chest pain
  • increased pain or increased need for pain relief medications
  • redness, swelling and/or discharge from a wound site
  • breast redness, fever and/or flu like symptoms associated with Mastitis
  • dizziness or feeling faint
  • fast heart rate
  • lost a lot of blood from your vagina
  • foul smelling vaginal discharge
  • fevers, shivering, sweating
  • any calf (lower leg) pain, redness, swelling or weakness in your legs
  • if you are worried in any way about your health or wellbeing

Contact us immediately if your baby has:

  • blood in their poo or bleeding from any part of your baby’s body
  • body temperature either high or low (either below 36.5 degrees C or above 37.4 degrees C)
  • projectile vomiting or vomiting repeatedly
  • fast, slow, difficult or noisy breathing
  • high pitched or irritable crying that doesn’t settle
  • hot feeding well or refusing to feed
  • being very sleepy, difficult to wake or floppy
  • changes in the colour of their skin: blue or pale, red or rashes
  • bruising on any part of your baby’s body
  • if you are worried at all about your baby
