Medical Inpatient Units 

Tweed Valley Hospital has a range of medical inpatient wards providing specialised care for patients.

Medical A3 Ward 1 - Cardiology

The Department of Cardiology, Tweed Valley Hospital is made up of a Coronary Care Unit (CCU) Inpatient Cardiology Unit and a Diagnostic Unit which includes a comprehensive Cardiac Rehabilitation. The department is supported by a Director of Cardiology, Medical Registrars, and specialist Cardiac nursing staff.

Medical B2 Ward 1 - GEM

The Geriatric Evaluation and Management Unit (GEM) provides care with the aim of improving the functioning of a person with multidimensional needs. We provide elderly, high risk patient timely access to rehabilitation and intensive multidisciplinary resources and therapies in a supported inpatient environment. GEM care is provided through individualised, goal oriented, documented multidisciplinary management plans.

Visiting hours: 8:00am to 8:00pm 7 days a week

Medical B5 - Palliative Care

Ward B5 provides medical and nursing care for patients with general medical conditions, with a specialised focus on Palliative care, Haematology and Oncology.

Access to Allied Health professionals on site, as well as referrals to other community resources including the ACAT team and Rehabilitation Units ensures patients and their families receive holistic nursing care.

The ward also has a well-developed discharge planning program which coordinates patients' care even after discharge.

Ward B5 consists of 7 single room palliative care beds and 18 beds catering for Oncology and Haemotology patients, including negative pressure, single and shared rooms.

Palliative Care visiting hours: 24 hours a day, 7 days a week

Medical B3 Ward 1 - Stroke

B3 Ward 1 is a 24-bed mixed ward of general and renal medicine incorporating a four-bed specialty Acute Stroke Unit (ASU) with cardiac monitoring capabilities.

This ward facilitates thorough assessment and diagnostic investigation through a multidisciplinary team for patients experiencing stroke or acute and chronic disease.

Medical B4 Ward 1 - General Medicine 

B4 Ward 1 is a 20-bed medical unit providing care to patients experiencing a broad range of acute and chronic medical conditions. Evidence-based treatment and patient centred care is provided by a multidisciplinary health care team consisting of doctors, nurses and allied health staff (physiotherapists, occupational therapists, dieticians, social workers and speech pathologists).

Surgical Inpatient Units

Tweed Valley Hospital has two dedicated surgical inpatient units, each providing specific patient-centred care to surgical patients.

Surgical A4 Ward 1 - General Surgery

This 28 bed unit cares for patients undergoing a wide range of general and complex surgical procedures with specialties including upper gastrointestinal, colorectal, breast and endocrine, urology, ear, nose and throat (ENT), thoracic and gynaecology. The surgical unit staff are experienced in caring for patients with post-operative complications including pain management, wound care, and nutritional needs. Single rooms are allocated according to clinical need.

Surgical A4 Ward 2 - Orthopaedic Surgery

This 24 bed unit provides care for elective surgical and orthopaedic trauma cases and includes an eight bed high volume surgical unit for post-operative care of general surgical procedures. The Orthopaedic unit staff are experienced in caring for patients in the post-operative phase, including pain management, wound care and nutritional needs. Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists and Pharmacists are involved in the multi-disciplinary approach to post-operative care.
