Grafton Base Hospital – Women’s Care UnitThe maternity service at Grafton Base Hospital(GBH) is friendly rural unit that provides a service to the local community for approximately 400 births per year. GBH offers pregnancy care in a partnership between hospital midwives and GP’s and/or local obstetricians. Other models available include GP care, or care by the private Obstetrician. The 12 bed unit is a level 4 role delineated maternity services and provides individualised care for mothers and babies born over 34 weeks gestation. Mothers and babies that require referral and/or consultation to a higher level of care are transferred to Lismore Base Hospital, or to other facilities outside the Northern NSW Local Health District. The service also includes regular birth and parenting groups; an early discharge program and referrals to child and family health.
The Special Care Nursery (SCN) is a Level 3 Neonatal Unit providing specialist care to sick term and preterm neonates greater than 34 weeks’ gestation.
The nursery is supported by neonatal nurses and midwives, staff specialists and a GP with Paediatric training.
- Access to the service is via self referral from a GP or Specialist Obstetrician
