Recovery and Wellbeing
Recovery in mental illness refers to the process of returning to physical, emotional, and psychological wellbeing where the individual can again enjoy the things in life that they would normally participate in.
This may mean a person is able to make healthy choices regarding sleep, exercise, and diet; that their home life is stable and safe; and that they can interact with their community in a safe and positive way.
The recovery process varies for each individual and may include being admitted to a hospital’s Mental Health Inpatient Unit or being seen in the community by a Community Mental Health Clinician.
Every person’s journey to recovery is unique, and how wellness looks for one person with mental illness may be different for another. There is no set timeframe for recovery, and talking to a mental health worker can help you understand the recovery process better.
These organisations provide information and support for individuals, as well as family members, friends, and carers of a person experiencing a mental illness.
