About the facilities
Lismore Base Hospital (LBH) is located in the City of Lismore in the Northern Rivers region of NSW. As a major acute care provider and referral facility we provide care to over 23,700 patients every year. Specialist services provided include Emergency, General Medicine & Surgery (including sub specialties), Obstetrics, Paediatrics, Aged Care and Mental Health. The hospital undertakes over 8,100 surgical procedures annually.
Lismore Women’s Care Unit is a level 5 Maternity service with approximately 1200 births /year and a level 4 Special Care Nursery. Services include antenatal, birthing and postnatal care. Ballina District Hospital is a local community, level 3 rural hospital providing care to over 8,300 patients every year. Services provided include Emergency, General Medicine, Aged Care & Rehabilitation and Surgery. The hospital undertakes over 860 surgical procedures and sees over 17,800 Emergency attendances annually.
Casino and District Memorial Hospital is a local community, level 3 rural hospital providing care to over 2,800 patients every year. Services provided include Emergency, General Medicine, Aged Care and Surgery. The hospital undertakes over 940 surgical procedures and sees over 14,500 Emergency attendances annually.
Kyogle Memorial MPS is a local community, level 2 rural hospital/MPS providing care to over 1,000 patients every year. Services provided include Emergency, General Medicine, Aged and Nursing Home Care. The hospital sees over 7,400 Emergency attendances annually.
Nimbin MPS is a local community, level 2 rural hospital/MPS providing care to over 163 patients every year. Services provided include Emergency, General Medicine, Aged and Nursing Home Care. The hospital sees over 4,600 Emergency attendances annually.
Urbenville & District MPS is a local community, level 2 rural hospital/MPS providing care to over 110 patients every year. Services provided include Emergency, General Medicine, Aged and Nursing Home Care. The hospital sees over 1000 Emergency attendances annually.
Bonalbo Multi-Purpose Service (MPS) is a local community, level 2 rural MPS within the Northern New South Wales Health District. The MPS sees more than 1,700 Emergency attendances annually.
Richmond Mental Health Network incorporates all Mental Services from Grafton to Lismore and Ballina. There are community services in Lismore, Ballina, Casino, and Grafton. All Inpatient Units are attached to Lismore Base Hospital including Adult Mental Health (Tallowood), Child & Adolescent Mental Health (Kamala), and Older Person’s Mental Health (Lilli Pilli). Specialties of the mental health service include a young person’s and family team, older person’s team, and extended and assessment care teams in the community.

(study days) including supernumerary time and orientation
All grads will attend a two day orientation to the Northern NSW Local Health District and The Richmond Health Services Group.
DETECT face to face training and Electronic Medical Record training will be provided prior to commencement of clinical placements. There will be a period of supernumerary time at the beginning of each clinical placement to provide orientation to the specific wards/clinical areas. Theoretical workshops and reflective practice opportunities are organized and designed to assist you with your transition from university to the workplace. During this time you will be given several Learning Activity Packages which you will be asked to complete over the duration of several months. The packages include; medication management, Drug Calculations, IV Therapy, CVAD, venepuncture and cannulation.
You will be provided with an opportunity to attend a number of study days scattered throughout the year. The study days will address key clinical and professional issues and concerns you may have about various clinical activities and interventions.
You can also request to attend other Staff Development sessions as they are offered throughout the year.
Rotations
The general Registered Nurse rotations offered will be, surgical (including orthopaedic); medical; a combination of both surgical and medical in the district hospitals; operating theatres, emergency department, mental health (adult and older person’s inpatient only), rural and remote. Opportunities will be given to graduates to elect their preferred ward/s and every effort will be made to accommodate requests.
Clinical placements rotations are mixed depending on where you are placed. They will occur after a period of 4 months or 6 months between wards and between the nominated hospitals.
Midwifery GradStart positions will rotate throughout the midwifery service.

Successful candidates will need to source their own accommodation. There are opportunities in Lismore or the surrounding areas. Urbenville and Bonalbo have accommodation onsite which staff may book during their rotation.

There are a range of social activities available throughout the Northern Rivers including the nearby Tweed/Byron area, the Gold Coast and Brisbane ranging from restaurants, theatres and services clubs to outdoor activities.
The Northern Rivers and the Gold Coast offer beaches, rivers and mountains for those who favour outdoor life.
