About the facilities
Grafton Base Hospital is a valley referral, level 3/4 base hospital within the Northern New South Wales Health District providing care to over 12,500 patients every year. Specialist services provided include Emergency, Intensive Care, General Medicine & Surgery (including sub specialities), Paediatrics and Aged Care. The hospital undertakes over 3,300 surgical procedures and sees over 24,700 Emergency attendances annually.
Maclean District Hospital is a local community, level 3 rural hospital within the Northern New South Wales Health District providing care to over 2,300 patients every year. Services provided include Emergency, General Medicine, Aged Care, Rehabilitation and Day Surgery. The hospital undertakes over 390 surgical procedures and sees over 13,400 Emergency attendances annually.
Grafton Base Hospital Maternity & Women’s Care Unit is a level 4 Maternity Unit with a 4 bed level 3 Special Care Nursery with between 400 – 500 births / year. Services include Antenatal, Birthing and Postnatal Care.

(study days) including supernumerary time and orientation
All grads will attend a two day orientation to the Northern NSW Local Health District, Grafton Base and Maclean District Hospitals.
DETECT training and Electronic Medical Record training will be provided prior to commencement of clinical placements. There will be a period of supernumerary time at the beginning of each clinical placement to provide orientation to the specific wards/clinical areas. Theoretical workshops and reflective practice opportunities are organized and designed to assist you with your transition from university to the workplace. During this time you will be given several Learning Activity Packages which you will be asked to complete over the duration of several months. The packages include; Drug Calculations, Basic Life Support, IV Therapy, PICC Lines.
You will be provided with an opportunity to attend a number of study days scattered throughout the year. The study days will address key clinical and professional issues and concerns you may have about various clinical activities and interventions. You can also request to attend other Staff Development sessions as they are offered throughout the year.
Rotations
There will be two Registered Nurse clinical rotations offered during your 12-month contract. Thes clinical rotations may include: surgical services (including operating theatres and recovery), medical or a combination of both surgical and medical and the emergency department. Clinical rotations will be for a period of six months.
Rotations between the nominated hospitals will also occur.
Midwifery positions will experience all aspects of the Maternity & Women's Care Service.

Grafton is famous for its tree lined streets, colonial architecture and acts as a Gateway to the country with 11 National Parks and State Forests in the surrounding area. Maclean is known as the Scottish town in Australia.
