EMERGENCY

In an emergency, always call triple zero (000). It’s a free call from any phone, mobile or phone box.

For other urgent medical issues, go to an Emergency Department.

Our Emergency Departments are open 24 hours a day, seven days a week:

What does our program offer?

We visit public schools in our health district to teach children how to take care of their teeth. We also check if their teeth are healthy and will advise their parents if they need to visit a dentist. If possible, we will also strengthen their teeth to fight against cavities.

All our services are free. If your child needs to see a dentist for further treatment, this can be performed at any of our public dental clinics. Our staff visiting the schools are highly qualified and experienced in working with children of all ages.

If you have any questions about our services or about your child’s dental treatment, please contact us on 1300 651 625, Monday to Friday between 8.30am to 4.30pm.

Why should my child have their teeth checked?

Healthy teeth are important for everyone, but especially for children. They are very important for your child’s development. Healthy teeth help your child learn how to eat and talk well. This helps them chew their food properly, make friends at school and feel confident about themselves.

They also set a good foundation for your child’s adult teeth.

Sometimes, your child may not realize that they have a cavity if they cannot see or feel it. If a cavity becomes big, it can lead to losing a tooth earlier than expected. This may cause problems for the adult tooth taking its place. It may also cause your child a lot of pain.

Finding and treating problems early are the best ways to prevent them becoming painful or complicated. More than half of the children we check through our school program need dental treatment.

We also teach children to form good habits such as brushing and eating well. By doing so, we tackle the root causes of common dental problems from a young age and set up a good foundation for life.

What is the difference between the NNSWLHD School Oral Health Program and other school programs?

Our program is linked to the NSW public health system. This means we can easily refer children on for further treatment at a public dental clinic, or additional specialist services.

Transferring your child’s follow up care from our school program to a specialist dental appointment is easy and seamless. We will contact you to make any future appointments that might be required, saving you the hassle of having to arrange this through a private provider. During our school checks, we can also assess your child’s nutrition and growth, and offer links to non-dental health services such as nutrition and exercise programs if needed.
