EMERGENCY

In an emergency, always call triple zero (000) for an ambulance. Ambulances are the safest way to be assessed, treated and transported to the right hospital for the care you need.

Triple zero (000) is a free call from any phone, mobile or phone box.

For less severe but still urgent situations, go to an Emergency Department.

There are 12 public hospital Emergency Departments in Northern NSW Local Health District and they are all available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Tweed Valley Hospital has earned three prestigious Time is Brain awards for delivering fast life-saving clot-busting treatments to stroke patients.

Presented by the NSW Telestroke Service, the awards celebrate the hospital’s achievement of having the third-fastest door-to-needle time in NSW.

Acute stroke is a medical emergency, where every second counts, so with a median time of just 46 minutes, the hospital surpasses both the national gold standard of 60 minutes and the NSW Telestroke average of 54 minutes.

Several examples of effective stroke care include a patient who arrived unable to speak and with arm weakness, and made a remarkable recovery after treatment, regaining speech and full arm function.  Two other patients received critical clot retrievals at the Gold Coast University Hospital following Tweed Valley Hospital’s swift intervention.

The team’s swift intervention also meant that other patients were able to receive critical clot retrievals at the Gold Coast University Hospital.

These achievements highlight the hospital’s commitment to excellence in stroke care, ensuring better outcomes for patients when time truly is brain.
