EMERGENCY

In an emergency, always call triple zero (000) for an ambulance. Ambulances are the safest way to be assessed, treated and transported to the right hospital for the care you need.

Triple zero (000) is a free call from any phone, mobile or phone box.

For less severe but still urgent situations, go to an Emergency Department.

There are 12 public hospital Emergency Departments in Northern NSW Local Health District and they are all available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Maclean District Hospital is set to benefit from a $1.6 million infrastructure upgrade, with two major projects announced recently by Minister for Health Ryan Park.

The funding will support:
  • Nurse call system upgrade
The hospital’s current nurse call system is outdated, with replacement parts no longer available. The new system will improve communication between patients and nursing staff, enhancing safety and care.
  • Hospital lift replaced
The existing lift, more than 30 years old, has experienced intermittent breakdowns. The new lift will provide a reliable and safe means of transport for patients, staff, and equipment.

The hospital’s mortuary facilities also had a recent upgrade with new walls, ceilings, flooring, refrigeration, and improved access.

NNSWLHD Chief Executive Tracey Maisey welcomed the investment.

“Investments like these ensure our teams have the tools and facilities they need to provide excellent care for the communities we serve,” Tracey said.

Minister for Regional Health Ryan Park said the upgrades were essential to ensure Maclean District Hospital operated safely and efficiently.

“These projects continue the improvement program ensuring that hospitals like Maclean can continue to deliver high-quality care to their communities,” Minister Park said.

Both projects will be undertaken following a rigorous tendering process, with work expected to begin in mid-2026. Planning is already underway to minimise disruption to staff and patients while the work is carried out.

These upgrades form part of ongoing capital works to ensure high-quality healthcare is delivered across the Northern Rivers.
