EMERGENCY

In an emergency, always call triple zero (000) for an ambulance. Ambulances are the safest way to be assessed, treated and transported to the right hospital for the care you need.

Triple zero (000) is a free call from any phone, mobile or phone box.

For less severe but still urgent situations, go to an Emergency Department.

There are 12 public hospital Emergency Departments in Northern NSW Local Health District and they are all available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

While much has been said about the incredible support the Northern Rivers received from the Australian Defence Force, NSW State Emergency Service and other authorities during this crisis, another group of heroes also deserves recognition.

More than 40 NSW Health staff travelled from across the State to lend a hand.

These dedicated professionals helped keep the District’s healthcare services running across multiple locations, including all four Multi-Purpose Services, Murwillumbah District Hospital, Tweed Valley Hospital, Lismore Base Hospital, Byron Central Hospital and the evacuation centres at Southern Cross University in Lismore and Kingscliff TAFE.

Nurses, physiotherapists, mental health practitioners, social workers and support staff joined the effort, ensuring local communities received the care they needed when it mattered most.

The support came from Sydney, South Eastern Sydney, South Western Sydney and Hunter New England Local Health Districts, Sydney Children’s Hospital, HealthShare NSW and the Centralised Resource Unit within the Ministry of Health.

Their support gave District teams a chance to rest after working overtime or double shifts. It also let others go home to check on their houses after sleeping onsite during the cyclone.

NNSWLHD Chief Executive Tracey Maisey said the generosity and dedication of these staff made a world of difference during this challenging time.

“Their willingness to step in, support our teams and help care for our community has been nothing short of extraordinary,” Tracey said.

“Whether they offered a reassuring presence or brought fresh energy to exhausted teams, every single contribution has mattered.

“To all who stepped up and supported Northern NSW during this time—thank you. Your dedication and compassion will not be forgotten.

“It’s moments like these that remind us of what it truly means to be part of the NSW Health family.”
