EMERGENCY

In an emergency, always call triple zero (000) for an ambulance. Ambulances are the safest way to be assessed, treated and transported to the right hospital for the care you need.

Triple zero (000) is a free call from any phone, mobile or phone box.

For less severe but still urgent situations, go to an Emergency Department.

There are 12 public hospital Emergency Departments in Northern NSW Local Health District and they are all available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Patients and staff came together at Ballina Hospital’s Rehabilitation Unit recently to celebrate an incredible milestone: the 106th birthday of local resident Evelyn Whyte.

Born on 29 January 1919, Evelyn was admitted to the Unit as part of her recovery from a small stroke a few weeks earlier and has since returned to her home in Lennox Head with the aid of support services.

“All of the staff at the Rehab Unit have been wonderful – the doctors, nurses, physios, OTs, catering and domestic staff,” Evelyn said.

“I came into the unit unable to move my hand or leg and after three weeks, although not back to normal, have greatly improved. This is due to the constant exercises, movement, use of equipment overseen by wonderful staff, who I might add, make it a lot of fun. I can’t fault the care I have been given.”

A firm Parramatta Eels supporter since the club formed in 1947, Evelyn credits her longevity to her good genes, eating well, keeping active and her love of socialising. She encourages youngsters to spend a lot of time outdoors, always use sunscreen and ‘not to be in such a rush’.

Ballina Rehabilitation Unit Nurse Unit Manager Gloria Vann wished Evelyn well, praising the work of her multi-disciplinary team, who have won several District awards for excellence in recent years.

“We work together well and have very high standards,” she said.

“The expectations of people who come to work here are high and we have really good engagement and interpersonal relationships with our patients. We love the fact we see our patients achieve their goals and be able to leave.”
