EMERGENCY

In an emergency, always call triple zero (000) for an ambulance. Ambulances are the safest way to be assessed, treated and transported to the right hospital for the care you need.

Triple zero (000) is a free call from any phone, mobile or phone box.

For less severe but still urgent situations, go to an Emergency Department.

There are 12 public hospital Emergency Departments in Northern NSW Local Health District and they are all available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

If you work in ED, you know how hectic it’s been as winter illnesses continue to impact the local community and the District facilities.

To reduce patient wait-time, stress for staff, and the load in busy EDs, can you please share information about Healthdirect through your networks.

Healthdirect is available to everyone for free health advice anytime, day or night. It’s a simple call on 1800 022 222 where a registered nurse will ask questions and connect a person to the right care.

They can:

  • find them a nearby doctor or pharmacist
  • refer to a suitable local urgent care service
  • connect to a virtual care service by phone or video
  • call an ambulance or direct them to the nearest emergency department if the situation is an emergency.

There is also an online healthdirect Symptom Checker and healthdirect Service Finder available to help when people are feeling unwell and need advice.
