EMERGENCY

In an emergency, always call triple zero (000) for an ambulance. Ambulances are the safest way to be assessed, treated and transported to the right hospital for the care you need.

Triple zero (000) is a free call from any phone, mobile or phone box.

For less severe but still urgent situations, go to an Emergency Department.

There are 12 public hospital Emergency Departments in Northern NSW Local Health District and they are all available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Grafton UHA volunteer members

The very active Grafton UHA will soon be celebrating its 125th anniversary.

In 1899 a group of local women banded together as the ‘Help Committee’ to canvas subscriptions to fund the Grafton Hospital.

In 1933/34 that support formalised into what we now call the Grafton United Hospital Auxiliary.

“A tradition of volunteering time and raising funds for the hospital was started, and we are proud to follow in their footsteps,” said Kerrie DiMattia, Grafton UHA President.

Former staff member Kay Paine, researched and wrote a book titled ‘History of the Grafton Hospital.’  Kay worked at the hospital for almost four decades, starting out as a nursing trainee before retiring as nursing director.

According to Kay’s research, the Grafton community agitated to get a hospital in 1863 after a man died on the floor of the police lock-up.

“Initially, financial support was the responsibility of local citizens. Subscribers to the hospital had to pay one pound for voting rights.

"This was a lot of money in those days, considering for a whole year a man could make 30 shillings," Kay said.

“For the first 20 years, the Grafton hospital was the only hospital between Brisbane and Newcastle.”

Kerrie said support for the hospital had taken many forms over the years, and not just financial.

“An egg appeal was held because the hospital needed eggs to feed the patients, and sewing bees helped to repair linen and clothes. The linen and bridge parties were very popular and street stalls were a huge success,” said Kerrie.

General Manager Grafton Base Hospital, Dan Madden praised the ongoing support of the local auxiliaries.

“We are immensely privileged to boast two thriving auxiliary branches in the Clarence Valley. Their steadfast support and generous contributions have left an indelible mark on countless lives within our community. Often operating behind the scenes, these auxiliaries are unsung heroes whose tireless efforts may not always receive the acknowledgment they deserve,” Dan said.

“The Grafton Branch UHA has now supported the Grafton Base Hospital for 125 years and the management and staff are really grateful for this.

“On this momentous occasion, I extend heartfelt congratulations and thanks to the numerous past and present UHA executive members and volunteers who have worked so hard over such a long time to ensure we have the latest equipment to help provide care and comfort for patients.

“The ongoing success of the Grafton UHA is testament to the great support within the local community for our local health services.”

The UHA are always on the look-out for new volunteers, said Kerrie. “If you’re community minded, looking to donate some time, enjoy great company and want to make a difference, we would love you to join us.”
