For other urgent medical issues, go to an Emergency Department.

Our Emergency Departments are open 24 hours a day, seven days a week:

Clinical placements are an important part of healthcare education, giving students an opportunity to apply the knowledge and  skills they are taught in the classroom in clinical settings. The experience students gain whilst undertaking a clinical placement in a NNSWLHD facility provides invaluable learnings to enrich both their personal and professional development. If you are a student interested in completing a placement in a NNSWLHD facility, speak with your Education Provider about future opportunities.

NNSWLHD only accepts students on clinical placement that are: part of the Education Provider formal course curriculum and are organised by the Education Provider through ClinConnect and in accordance with NSW Health Clinical Placement Policies.

The following advice is provided in regards to:

Elective Placements – relates to medical students only

If you have an elective placement as part of your course curriculum and your Education Provider has advised you to organise your own placement, the following steps need to be completed:

  • Check with your Education Provider to determine if it has a current SPA with NNSWLHD.
  • You will need to have reached agreement with a NNSWLHD Clinical Supervisor to supervise you on clinical placement.
  • Your Education Provider will need to either request or enter your placement details in ClinConnect.

You will need to have organised your elective placement 12 weeks in advance.

Non Curriculum Clinical Placement Requests
  • NNSWLHD does not accept students on clinical placement if it is not part of their formal course curriculum.
Other Placements – students being required to organise their own clinical placements (as part of their Course Curriculum)
  • NNSWLHD does not encourage direct approaches by students in organising their clinical placement.  You will need to advise your Education Provider of this NNSWLHD requirement. Your Education Provider will need to liaise with NNSWLHD to organise your placement –  at least 12 weeks in advance.

My Health Learning – NSW HEALTH MANDATORY E-LEARNING TRAINING MODULES FOR STUDENTS

All clinical students are required to complete the following NSW Health mandated eLearning modules prior to the commencement of placement:

Health Learning Chart 1

Post-graduate midwifery students are also required to complete the additional mandatory training modules as per NSW Health policy requirements:

Additional Student Resources

While these modules are not mandatory, they provide a good refresher and a bit more detailed information about what precautions need to be taken in a hospital environment, especially during events such as COVID-19. Students are able to complete the module and print off a certificate.

International Students

International students who are enrolled in a university course (home country or overseas university) and who are seeking a clinical placement within a NSW Health public health service must organise this through an Australian Education Provider.

Patients and Community

The hosting of university and TAFE health science students on clinical placement within NNSWLHD plays a vital part in contributing to the development of the students who are emerging as future health professionals.  Clinical training provides students with the opportunity to apply their knowledge, skills and attitudes learnt at university, college or TAFE. At NNSWLHD we enjoy active participation and co-operation.  All students on clinical placement are supervised by our highly experienced clinicians and educators.  NNSWLHD has a long established history of hosting students on clinical placement and delivering quality clinical training programs.  A key component underpinning the success of our clinical training programs has been the active participation of our patients and community in allowing students to participate in their care and treatment.

We value and acknowledge that our patients and community are at the heart of student teaching and learning in our health service.  However, we fully support and respect patients and community who may decide they do not wish to have a student involved in their treatment. Patients and community will be asked if they wish to participant and have the right to say ‘no’.

NNSWLHD receives a lot of positive feedback from students who indicate how much they have gained from their clinical training experience and their interaction with patients and community.

As a future patient or if you are needing to access a community service and you decide to participate in our student learning programs, you may be asked to provide feedback.  Your feedback is most welcome as it will help us develop and improve our teaching activities and health services.
