Lismore Base Hospital has launched a new volunteer role designed to make a real difference for patients who need extra help at mealtimes.
The Feeding and Mealtime Support program gives volunteers the opportunity to provide hands-on assistance with feeding, while also offering companionship during one of the most important parts of the day.
Emily Francis, Dietitian and Program Lead, says the initiative is based on proven success across NSW Health.
“I’ve worked at a site that had a very successful volunteer feeding program in a neurosurgery ward for over 10 years,” she said.
“They even published research on its benefits, and it’s becoming increasingly common in NSW Health.”
The program is aimed at supporting patients who face challenges during mealtimes, such as those in aged care, living with dementia, or recovering from stroke – particularly patients without family or local support.
“Having volunteers assist with food access and feeding specific patients can make a big impact,” Emily said.
“It’s more than just hydration and nutrition; it’s about companionship and the social benefits of sharing a meal.”
Volunteers will receive specialist training from dietitians and speech pathologists and will work under the supervision of the nurse in charge of the ward.
Lismore Base Hospital is now recruiting for this role. If you’d like to make a difference in the lives of patients.
