EMERGENCY

In an emergency, always call triple zero (000) for an ambulance. Ambulances are the safest way to be assessed, treated and transported to the right hospital for the care you need.

Triple zero (000) is a free call from any phone, mobile or phone box.

For less severe but still urgent situations, go to an Emergency Department.

There are 12 public hospital Emergency Departments in Northern NSW Local Health District and they are all available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

In times of stress, pain and illness, it’s always great to know the amazing, compassionate, dedicated staff across the District are there to support our patients. There’s no expectation of thanks from patients, but gee it’s wonderful when those acknowledgements are received!

Here are a few recent notes of thanks:

Tweed ICU

Thanks Tweed ICU. Hospitals are always getting criticised, but our experience with Tweed Valley Hospital Intensive Care Unit (ICU) has been something to applaud.

Our mother spent 99 days on life support in the ICU in 2012 with Guillain-Barre Syndrome and the staff were caring, considerate and got her well again. They ensured she was both physically and mentally cared for. For the past 14 years she was able to return to living a normal life.

Recently mum wound up in the ICU again and this time she was not so lucky. She was on life support yet again, but this time it needed to be turned off. However, the care and consideration of the staff was phenomenal. They gave us some time to say goodbyes, they spoke to her and treated her as a precious human being and we were left feeling like she was loved by all in the room when the machines were turned off.

Thank you, Tweed Valley Hospital staff, for all you did for our mother and for all you do on a daily basis to help others.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐TVH

Just had a successful VBAC delivery in the beautiful new birthing suites at Tweed Valley Hospital. Special shout-out to midwife Brit for her support. It was a very positive birth, I did not feel rushed or pressured to do anything which left me feeling so safe. Baby needed some monitoring in the hours after birth but this was so relaxed and I was able to have my bed taken into special care so we could be together.
The staff are wonderful and I couldn’t have asked for a better birth, thank you 😊

... we received a lovely email saying how a family expressed their gratefulness and praised the entire staff about their brother’s last days before he passed away.

The family were truly appreciative of the care and compassion shown to their brother and the whole family.

They described the care as exceptional, amazing and very perfect in every detail with professional humour and attention to detail and thoughtfulness of the staff.

To the wonderful doctors, nurses, cleaners and dieticians of E10

From the bottom of our hearts we thank you for the tender care and support you gave to Tommy and to us his family.

Byron Central Hospital – relayed to EO/DoN

“Today I received some lovely feedback from a family member of a long stay patient in our inpatient unit. This lady expressed her gratitude for the compassionate care shown to her and her partner, expressing ‘all the staff are lovely and are a credit to the hospital’. Both Inpatient, ED and support staff were included in this liberal praise during our conversation. Thank you for your kindness, your empathy and for putting the patient and family in the centre of their care.”

Maclean Hospital in the Home

Wonderful HITH nurses, not only professional and helpful but also incredibly kind and attentive. I appreciate the way they went above and beyond to care for me. In this busy world it’s unusual to meet someone who brings so much heart and thoughtfulness to their job. Each day was something to look forward to and made me feel not alone.
Keep up the great work – Thank you!

Grafton Base Hospital - via facebook

To the staff at Grafton Base Hospital day surgery, I have just had cataract surgery at this fabulous medical unit and wish to give genuine thanks to everyone for their friendly and professional care, they made a scary experience bearable and thank you for the beef sandwich afterwards, it was delicious. Many thanks again, Martin.

Murwillumbah District Hospital – via mail

I would like to let you know how impressed I was with the care and treatment of my sibling who was a patient until they died in January. I could not be more impressed with the facilities that I saw, and the compassionate care that my sibling received. I have had experience with a number of hospitals around the world and can say that Murwillumbah is by far the best that I have seen.

All the members of staff were unfailingly friendly, caring and helpful. The doctors, nurses, social workers – everyone with whom we came in contact – gave us their time and we felt their compassion. Time was given to us to talk about our sibling’s condition, and the kitchen, delivery and cleaning people, all were as helpful as they could be. They were moved to the end room and so they had a lovely view from the window for their last day. Thank you for doing that. Our sincere thanks to everyone at Murwillumbah Hospital, and to the (Matron) Manager, who obviously imbues the hospital with the serene, compassionate and caring ethos that we sisters found.  (The Matron was Genevieve 😊)
