Lismore Base Hospital Redevelopment
A $312.75 million investment in health care over the past decade is delivering an expanded Lismore Base Hospital to meet the needs of the local community and surrounding areas.
The Lismore Base Hospital upgrade works began in 2013 and have been delivered in stages, to ensure the hospital remains safe and open to patients throughout the redevelopment.
The construction works have seen the delivery of:
- two new hospital towers, the south tower and the north tower, including more beds, a new and expanded emergency department, and expanded service delivery
- a helipad
- a multi-deck car park
- refurbishment of the existing hospital building C block.
Early works (2013-14)
Works got underway in 2013, with the construction of new and temporary buildings as well as demolition of some old buildings to make way for the new hospital towers.
The early works included:
- construction of a new pathology building
- construction of a new, temporary women’s care wing with 10 post-natal beds
- relocation of the mortuary to a newly refurbished area providing more modern facilities and a new viewing room
- demolition of the old pathology, mortuary and maternity buildings.
Multi-deck car park (2015-16)
Opening in July 2016, the Uralba Street car park is located directly opposite the hospital’s main entry and has 270 parking spaces over five levels. A pedestrian crossing enables staff, patients and visitors to easily access the hospital. The Lismore Base Hospital car park was a $9.27 million project funded by the NSW Government.
Construction of the South and North towers (2014-2020)
The construction of the south and north towers was delivered in two stages, to enable the hospital to remain safe and operational throughout construction.
Stage 3a
Jointly funded by the Australian and NSW governments, the $80.25 million Lismore Base Hospital Redevelopment Stage 3a, completed in July 2016, saw the delivery of:
- a new South Tower at the front of the site, including a new exterior front entry to the existing Hospital Main Entrance, a new patient drop-off area, and some internal existing building refurbishments
- New Emergency Department with 51 treatment spaces; a new short stay unit; a fast-track service; and a paediatrics area
- New Renal department with 18 haemodialysis treatment spaces, including three isolation rooms; 3 peritoneal dialysis home training rooms; and a private courtyard and forecourt area
- Helipad works commenced.
Funding for Stage 3a included $60.25 million from the Australian Government’s Health and Hospitals Fund and $20 million from the NSW Government.
Stage 3b
The NSW Government invested $180 million in delivering Stage 3b of the Lismore Hospital Redevelopment, which included the construction and fit out of the South Tower including the helipad, demolition works to Block A of the existing hospital building and construction of North Tower.
Completed in 2020, stage 3b included:
- new and expanded inpatient wards, including one medical and one surgical ward
- a new integrated women’s care unit including maternity, special care nursery and birthing suite
- a new paediatric unit
- a new and expanded operating suite including nine operating theatres and two procedure rooms
- new medical imaging services
- new pharmacy
- new front entry facilities
- a new rooftop helipad.
Refurbishment of existing hospital buildings (2021-2022)
Following the completion of the new hospital buildings, refurbishment of the existing hospital buildings is providing further improvements and upgraded services.
Among the benefits of this extra work are improvements to:
- education, training and research facilities, including a library and a new 166-seat auditorium
- a new main reception area
- specialist medical beds
- hospital administration facilities
- cardiology services
- outpatient clinics
- community health services.
These refurbishments are the final stage of the redevelopment project with all work due for completion this year.
