Paediatric Inpatient Services

NNSW LHD provides paediatric inpatient services in three facilities;

Infrequent paediatric inpatient services are also provided for post-operative minor procedures at available at Ballina District Hospital and The Casino and District Memorial Hospital.

NNSW LHD provides a range of services that focus on both enhancing the health and wellbeing of children and young people and their caregivers. There is commitment to providing a comprehensive range of high quality and accessible acute health care services within a holistic framework. Paediatric services are provided to children that meet the psychological, physical and social wellbeing of the child, young person and their family.

Specialist Paediatric Services are provided primarily through Lismore Base, The Tweed and Grafton Base Hospitals. These services are supported by VMO and Staff Specialist Paediatricians and highly skilled and trained Paediatric Nurses and Allied Health Professionals.

Emergent and emergency paediatric surgery is provided at The Tweed, Lismore and Grafton Base Hospitals by general surgeons. Paediatric sub-specialist surgical services are provided outside the LHD at Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital in Brisbane. The Tweed Hospital and Lismore and Grafton Base Hospitals provides elective and emergency surgical services for paediatrics within its level 4 paediatric surgical role delineation services. Grafton Base Hospital provides non-complex, elective and emergency surgical services. Surgery requiring Overnight admission, Day Surgery and Endoscopy for some selected paediatric surgery at a level 4 Paediatric Surgical role delineation.

Casino and District Memorial Hospital has a level 2 short stay inpatient service for paediatrics which provides non-complex, day surgery for paediatric dental procedures at a level 3 paediatric surgical role delineation. In addition to this service. Ballina District Hospital provides minor, non-complex ENT day surgery at a level 3 paediatric surgical role delineation.

All other hospitals in NNSW LHD are providing paediatric services at a no planned service (NPS) role delineation. All these NPS services provide emergency paediatric care prior to discharge or transfer to a higher level of care. There is capacity for short stay observation for children at these services in the ED only.

Across NNSW LHD access to on site paediatric care varies according to role delineation requirements. A paediatrician is available on call 24 hours at each level 4 service or accessible via phone to provide clinical advice for paediatric patients anywhere in the LHD. Paediatric Services are provided by Specialist Paediatricians, Fellow of Australian College of Emergency Medicine or Emergency Medicine Specialists, Career Medical Officers, Registrars, Resident Medical Officers, and GP VMOs with paediatric training.

As per the State-wide NSW Health Draft Paediatric Framework, consultation and transfer occurs within a hub and spoke model.

  • Murwillumbah District Hospital

Maclean District Hospital refers to:

  • Grafton Base Hospital

Lismore Base Hospital provides services for:

  • Ballina District
  • Casino and District Memorial Hospitals
  • Kyogle, Bonalbo,Nimbin and,Urbenville Multi-Purpose Services

Children who require a higher level of care or specialist paediatric services are generally transferred or retrieved to Queensland hospitals. On occasion they may be transferred to NSW tertiary services in Newcastle or Sydney.
