In an emergency, always call triple zero (000) for an ambulance. Ambulances are the safest way to be assessed, treated and transported to the right hospital for the care you need.

Triple zero (000) is a free call from any phone, mobile or phone box.

For less severe but still urgent situations, go to an Emergency Department.

There are 12 public hospital Emergency Departments in Northern NSW Local Health District and they are all available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Byron Central Hospital is calling for community members to join a volunteer program which will soon be introduced at the hospital.

The Healthcare Helper volunteer program, run by the Northern NSW Local Health District, enlists volunteers from the community to assist hospital staff and provide comfort and emotional support to patients and their families.

Tracey Sheehan, BCH Executive Officer and Director of Nursing is excited about the introduction of the Healthcare Helper program locally, after seeing the important impact volunteers have made at other facilities in the Local Health District.

“This volunteer program will support both patients and nursing staff alike. I believe our patients will really appreciate the companionship volunteers can offer,” Ms Sheehan said.

The hospital is seeking volunteers to be patient companions in the Inpatient Unit, where they will enhance the experience of patients through support and engagement activities.

BCH Inpatient Unit Nurse Unit Manager Emily Duval says having volunteers on her ward will be invaluable.

“Having volunteers who can spend time with our patients will be so impactful. The types of patients we see in our ward would greatly benefit from companionship and enrichment activities during their stay,” Ms Duval said.

Northern NSW Local Health District currently has around 150 Healthcare Helpers across Tweed Valley, Ballina, Lismore, Grafton, Maclean, Kyogle, Nimbin, Urbenville and Bonalbo hospitals.

People from all ages, backgrounds and walks of life are encouraged to apply to be a Healthcare Helper, and no previous experience is necessary.

All volunteers undergo orientation and training to ensure they are well-prepared for their roles.
