CHEGS (Community Health Education Groups) Exercise was established in 1979 and has since been delivering low cost physical activity groups to mainly older adults across the Northern NSW Local Health District.

CHEGS currently offers low cost classes in:

  • Exercise
  • Yoga, and
  • Tai Chi/Qigong

CHEGS classes are led by facilitators who are fully accredited and registered Fitness Instructors with Fitness Australia. CHEGS Exercise leaders are self-employed and Northern NSW Local Health District -Health Promotion Unit provides leader training, support and quality assurance for the classes. CHEGS leaders are trained and experienced in providing group exercise for older adults and offer high quality classes tailored to participant’s needs.

Participants of CHEGS physical activity groups report that CHEGS exercise groups improve their overall wellbeing, reduce their GP visits, improve their balance and strength, increase the amount of physical activity they do (even on days they do not attend a CHEGS class) and improve their social connection.

Are CHEGS courses affordable?

CHEGS uses fully accredited and insured Instructors but aims to keep fees to a minimum. As a general rule, our courses are less expensive than an equivalent course offered elsewhere.

How are CHEGS courses different from those offered by others?

Our priority is your good health. Other than the very obvious financial difference, CHEGS employs accredited and insured Instructors who are provided with quality ongoing training.

Costs

Fees are paid directly to the CHEGS exercise class leader

  • All CHEGS classes have the following price structure:
  • $60 for 10 classes when paid in advance
  • $8 per casual class
