Murwillumbah District Hospital – Amputee Clinic

The Amputee Clinic at Murwillumbah Hospital now offers a comprehensive lower limb amputation management program. Previously, patients travelled to Lismore, Southport or Brisbane to access prosthetic services. The amputee service provides seamless care to lower limb amputees from the acute phase immediately post amputation. right through to long standing amputees experiencing prosthetic problems. Specific interventions include: preoperative assessment and advice, acute postoperative medical and stump care as an Inpatient at Urliup Rehabilitation Unit, pre-prosthetic equipment and discharge planning, prescription and manufacture of both interim and definitive lower limb prostheses, prosthetic gait training and long term wound, stump and prosthetic follow up. The service is staffed by a Rehabilitation Staff Specialist, an accredited Prosthetist, a Physiotherapist with experience in lower limb amputation rehabilitation. There is also full time Occupational Therapy, Nursing and Social Work staff who will provide input on an ‘as needed’ basis.

  • Every 2nd Tuesday from 10.00am until 3.00pm
  • All patients seen in the Amputee Clinic require a GP referral
  • The Rehabilitation Specialist will review all referrals to ascertain whether a medical review is required.
  • The patient should meet the following entry criteria: Reside in our catchment area, be keen to participate in therapy, be medically stable and have good cognition
